I was commissioned by email to create an illustration for a wedding invitation. The whole thing was a scam. From the beginning, I knew it; there were tell-tale signs in the email. But I went ahead with the project anyway, just for fun and for the practice. We strung each along for several days. If he/they were going to waste my time, I was going to waste theirs by making them think I was an easy mark.
The scammer sent photos to choose from for reference. He and his "spouse" (note: he never called her his fiancé) wanted a cartoony or painterly style. He also requested the inclusion of a purple dahlia, about which he wrote: "My spouse will be so surprised and delighted!" He also specified the colors redwood and purple. Strange combo for a wedding, eh?
I don't know who this couple is, but they are certainly attractive and I enjoyed illustrating their, uh, love. I used Adobe Illustrator and made lots of layers.
Here is the final illustration.
I stopped myself before rendering her dress. The flower had taken too much time. Besides, I knew it was a scam, and honestly, I had no interest in drawing lace without adequate compensation! (The plan was to print on 5" x 7" card.)
